The Institute for Biomedical Sciences is focused on giving students an exceptional education. We tailor our degree programs to the biomedical industry’s needs so that our students will be competitive for jobs available now and in the future.

Founded in 2014, the institute has already achieved many milestones. Our 13 stellar, world-renowned faculty members are awarded $20 million annually in external research funding to study a variety of important human diseases. Some of our major research areas include immunology, infectious diseases, vaccinology, microbial pathogenesis, and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Biomedical science is one of the most exciting research fields, and a number of our projects are well on their way to taking the leap from the research laboratory to being used in a clinical setting.

And we’re only getting started.

Location and Strength

Georgia State’s location in Atlanta provides an added benefit, positioning students near many potential employers who value our focus on understanding the basis of a range of important human diseases and developing innovative approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment that would lead to better patient care and new commercial products.

These areas of research strengths include:

  • Infectious diseases like Ebola, flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), measles, HIV and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  • Inflammatory diseases like inflammatory bowel disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, otitis media and autoimmune diseases.

Our proximity to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and leading bioscience, healthcare and pharmaceutical companies further enhances the potential for our research.

Our Affiliates

We have academic collaborators just a short drive away at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as across the country at Boston University, Cornell University, Harvard University, the University of Michigan and Yale University. Our faculty also work closely with universities worldwide, including Kumamoto University in Japan and the University of Bern in Switzerland.

In addition, we have strong alliances with government agencies and biotechnology firms in the United States and around the globe, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Amgen, UCB Inc., the Medical Research Council in the United Kingdom and the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan.

These strong collaborations have led to business opportunities. Dr. Richard Plemper is working on taking a antiviral drug discovery from his lab to the marketplace.
